2012- A year in review
Wow I thought 2011 was quite a year, but 2012 top the cake. Of course most of it I don’t want to remember, but then that means forgetting most of Max’s first year and Bella’s 4th year. Thankfully most of the good is on the blog and those are the memories that I want my kids and even me to remember 20 years from now.
As a tip, I’ll be highlighting passed blog post through out this post, so click on any link to see what I’m talking about.
January started out very quiet in our house. I had asked mother nature for no snow until Max was born but she took it a wee bit too far. We went from enjoying the warm weather one day to Snow the next. It would be a few days before we took Max outside to experience it. We rounded out the month with one last Christmas celebration.
February was so busy and it’s a short month on top of it all. We did some traveling to the other side of the state including Max’s first night spent at Nana’s and Bella’s first hair cut . We also visited Aunt Diane and Auntie Tori, I think the first time for the year with both of them, where Max rolled over at Auntie Tori’s! Then to round out the month we had Max’s Baptism. He’ the first kid I know who enjoyed the water part but cried for everything else.
March was a fun month, We took our first real family vacation up to the Dells. We stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge and had a blast! I didn’t want to leave. We also managed a trip to the zoo, I don’t think I posted that we also went in January to the zoo too. We celebrated St. Patty’s day with a photo shoot outside, probably the first one ever with Mr. Max. Then we celebrated easter with the Jahnke family, did an Egg hunt and my birthday all at the end of the month.
April rolled in with a big change for us.. a new car! Josh finally had enough of being stuck in our little Malibu so we upgrade to an SUV. Josh and I celebrated our 5th anniversary, not with anything special because Josh was in the fields. We had Lizzy, as Bella called her , come stay with us for a bit and helped us get ready for our 2nd go at chickens. We celebrated Easter at my sister’s and then again the next day with Martin and Judy. In between all of this we had many trips to Madison to see friends and family ,including a group lunch, the Great Diaper Change, a baby shower, and Drew starring in the musical Charlie and the chocolate factory!
Then May came.. oh a month of highs and lows, it was great mother’s day, Bella was kid of the week and Max turned 6 months old then we got the news about Josh.
Then our whole summer was one like we never had before, and pray we never do. Josh wasn’t able to do much in the fields or the farm, so we stopped hanging out in the barn and such. We celebrated Father’s day the weekend before . Josh had surgery and then spent almost two weeks in the hospital. That was some interested times as our little family was pretty divided up. Once we got home, we started a whole new normal.
We spend the summer doing summer things with Josh taking it easy as he had a long recovery. We saw the fireworks (Bella hated them still and Max was in awe), we traveled to meet Alex Rose and go to the Warpinski Family reunion , Bella had two session of swimming lessons and she was swimming like a fish by the time she got done. I wish I would have put her in more. Bella Turned 4 at the end of the month while Josh turn 29. Bella had a very spread out birthday, but she loved it and it was nice to not overwhelm her all at once.
August came and Josh had to start treatment, so we took daily trips to Dubuque and back. We spend a lot of time fishing since it’s the one thing Josh has no time for when he’s farming. Josh wasn’t able to milk or harvest, so we had to distract him with fishing. We also visited the fair, the corn roast and had a bunch of family come visit. The most exciting part of August was Bella starting four year old Kindergarten! I thought it would be rough sending her to a new school, but she did great!
September started off with some sadness as we attended the funeral of his uncle. But then labor day it was really hot, which didn’t work well for Josh. We were able to get some fishing in for a bit before it was just too much. Then we decided at the last minute to head up to Sheboygan for Alex Rose’s baptism. We got to do some fun things like go to the River museum, Bella had Grandparents day at school, friends came to visit us, we hit up the apple orchards , harvest fest and Carroll homecoming . We also started to venture out into the farm again. Josh finished up his radiation and was on a break before the next round started up again.
I think October was one of the busiest months, We did a bunch of traveling on the weekends; birthday party, zoo, family holiday get together and Halloween events. We also were in the annual Harvest Fest parade. The weather was also so nice that we spend a lot of time outside which. Max also had tubes put in his ears which no one liked, but it cut his monthly ear infections to none!
November moved into quickly and before we all knew it Max’s first birthday was here. Josh was able to get a deer for opening day. I was able to get away for a weekend with no kids and Josh managed to survive with the two of them. We celebrated thanksgiving and Bella got to go on her first black Friday shopping trip. My phone took a bath in the toilet thanks to Max, so that was a fun adventure to getting a new one.
Fastward to this month and wow the year had just flown by! We started off with a Christmas party, then cookie baking, a Christmas concert , and a long holiday trip around the state to see family. It was a busy month were the snow finally came to give Bella an extended holiday break. we end the month with Josh sick with the flu and the rest of us praying we don’t get it too. Looking back we did have some great moments and hoping for 2013 to be even more exciting!

Dec 30th- A good day
Despite my husband being sick, this has been a good day. Since I got so much done yesterday, I was able to not have to worry about as much. Josh let me sleep in a little bit, which helped a lot. Sleep has not been something I’ve gotten in the last few weeks. Josh fed Max and then went to shower and back to bed. I fed Bella and myself and slowly got the rest of us ready for the day. The kids played so well in their box house and with the kitchen. Max went down for a nap and so I decided time to do something fun with Bella.
We went out sledding. She was a bit unsure at first and we had to go looking for the right place, but she had a blast. Matter of fact I had to bribe her to go in the house. I took a few pictures and then put the camera away to just enjoy the moments. we took turns on the sled , only my turns were interrupted by dogs or a little girl hopping on my lap. We went to visit Merry Christmas Bird in the barn and she was so happy to see us. Guess once Josh is back up to doing chores we better go outside too. We also visited the other calves as well. I gave them all a little treat of hay from the round bales we recently got.
Once we came in, we decided to make cookies. I used the new cook book Josh got me. we made peanut butter cup cookies. they are yummy! The kids love them and they are the perfect size for them too. Then Josh decided he wanted to go outside and see how things were. Since max had woken up and I wanted to take him out sledding too, we all bundled back up to go out.
Max loved being pulled in the sled, but if it wasn’t moving he wasn’t happy, nor did he like Bella’s sled. He got to play around in the snow a bit too since I noticed the calves didn’t get hay and I had to feed them. Let’s just say a wheelbarrow full of hay being pushed down a snowy hill and pulling a little boy in a sled made for a very interesting show. LOL
By that time Max was done, so inside we came. We decided to eat up leftovers for lunch which made it really easy. Then it was clean up and nap time for the rest of the family. I used the time to watch a little brainless tv and catch up on my blogging.
Max apprently is not feeling well, weather it be from teething or the Tamiflu so he woke up early but then slept with Daddy while Daddy watched the football game. We had to wake Bella up. We watched the tv and attempted to cook supper. After supper we went downstairs for something new. that worked because max was in a better mood.
Bed time was early again..but it’s all good when everyone really needs the rest

Dec 26th-29th Doctors , road trip and sickness
So to celebrate the end of the Christmas season, Josh had is chemo appt. This was another early one, so Diane came to watch Bella and we took Max with us. Max did great with everyone giving him attention. He and I did leave to go get lunch so that really helped to break up the time. Once josh was done we made a stop at farm and Fleet to exchange a gift and came home with a field cultivator for max’s tractor and a pink case tractor for Bella. Hint to John Deere..could you make a pink one please. I’m pretty sure Diane stayed for supper and to catch up since we hadn’t had time to talk in while. Bella was not happy to share her AuntDiane when we came home.
Next up was a road trip to Calmar Iowa to get some hay bales. Oh the adventure. It took forever to leave town and then we had a few stops along the way. But we stopped in Decorah Iowa for lunch and to look around, only problem was the trailer and truck made it hard to find parking so not too much of an adventure. But we got the bales and headed home. We got there just in time for chores.
Overnight Josh got sick. By 2am I knew it was the flu, but not much we could do then. The Doctor’s were book, but thankfully I had already had an appt scheduled so he took mine. It took most of the day, three trips to town before he got medicine. Since it was the flu, the whole family got treated. It was a rough day all around to say the least.
Thankfully Diane came back on Saturday to help me get caught up with the deep cleaning I needed to do to get his house germ free. Josh spend most of the day resting, as he needed it and the kids had so much fun with Diane. It was a much needed stress relief day

Dec 25th: merry christmas
Wow, christmas is finally here! We started off the morning early, go figure. But Bella was excited to go to Nana’s to celebrate! We actually arrived at my mom’s a little after 10am. We had a slight mishap on the way though. Max managed to pull the nipple off his bottle and it leaked all over his car seat, so his Christmas outfit had to be changed as soon as we got to my mom’s. Then after lunch and dessert Max managed to get his back up outfit all dirty and changed again! Everyone had fun opening gifts and we had so much food! Every year Mom thinks it won’t be enough and it’s always too much! I loved all my gifts as did the kiddos. We ended up playing Drew’s Millionaire Monopoly and Bella and I were the winners!
This little boy loves his car…and tractor!
Little tree, Big gifts!
Max lost the love of unwrapping. He sat on Aunt Tracey’s lap for his stocking and then was done.
